Writing an action research report 

Action research is conducted by professionals in a specific field with the aim of continuous reflection and improvement. Action research is particularly popular in the educational field. Teachers often use action research to improve teaching learning process by testing different teaching methods. Teacher can solve the problem faced in teaching learning process on their own by conducting action research.

Researcher must understand the process which is followed while conducting action research. This helps researcher to write effective action research report. The action research report should contain background behind conducting action research, title of the research, review of related literature and researches, deciding methodology, tools and techniques, collection of data, analysis of data, drawing conclusion.

Need of writing a research report of action research-

A systematic writing in a particular format is known as report of action research.

1.       Report writing is necessary to communicate the result obtained in the research to others.

2.       It is necessary to make the findings of the research known to others which is done through report writing.

3.       It provides idea about the method of research, procedure of the research, way of solving problems of particular research.

4.       Research report becomes guide to the person who is conducting research similar to the previous one.

5.       Research report writing is necessary for a project given to a person by government to fulfill the required outcomes.

6.       Many people and friends help the researcher in conducting the research. They are curious in knowing the findings of the research which is fulfilled by report writing.

7.       It provides direction to further researches.

8.       If the research is conducted for acquiring degree then that individual gets that degree by completing report writing.

9.       Many times grant is provided for research work. The aim of this grant is fulfilled after writing report and submitting to that institute.

10.   Previous research reports provide new ideas, new problems and ways to solve them.

11.   Research report serves the purpose of permanent evidence.

Precautions to be taken while writing a action research report-

1.       Simple Language- The researcher should use simple, meaningful and flowing language. The ornamental language should be avoided. Researcher should not use difficult and ambiguous words.

2.       Presentation- Researcher should use sequential and logical presentation of thoughts.

3.       Index- There should be index of all the chapters and appendix at the beginning of report followed by detail index containing content of each chapter. Index of tables in chapter, index of diagram and map if required in the report. Every chapter should have index.

4.       Margin- there should be proper margin from all sides. There should be 2 inch margin from left side, 1 inch from right, top and bottom.

5.       Size of paper- Researcher should use A4 size paper.

6.       Tense- Report should be written in past tense.

7.       Representation- The word ‘Researcher’ should be used instead of ‘I’, ‘Myself’.

8.       Grammar- Report should be grammatically correct.

9.       Logical Presentation-Every point should be presented logically in the report. The conclusion drawn should be presented scientifically.

10.   Continuity- There should be proper and systematic sequence in each chapter to get continuity.

11.   Brief and Clear- Report should be brief and clear. The reader should be able to understand the report without any difficulty.

12.   References- if researcher is using any content from other book as it is then he should provide the reference from where he has taken that content. Scientific Language- The report should be in a scientific language. Report should not contain unnecessary information. The ornamental language should not be used.

13.   Space in two lines- While typing the report space in two lines should be double.

14.   Font Size-For report typing Font size should be 14 and heading font size should be 16.

15.   Scope of the research study- Researcher selects the subject and topic. The reader did not get idea of the depth of the subject and topic just by seeing the title of the research. So the researcher should write clear scope of the subject so that the researcher and even the reader will not go away from the track nor get confused.

16.   Appendix- Researcher should provide all the supportive matter in appendix which is used in the research such as list of students used as sample, question paper, model answer along with marking scheme, marks of pretest and posttest, statistical calculation, other tools used in research such as checklist blank and filled, teaching aids used in research (charts, ppt printouts, work cards, flash cards, maps, photographs etc.), sample of answer sheet of two students.

17.   Bibliography- The books used for taking help in understanding the method, tools and the information related to the research should be mentioned in bibliography along with name of the book, name of the author, publication and year of publication.

18.   Binding- Researcher can do spiral binding of the report or using black cardboard with golden embossing on it.
