Types of research

What are the types of research?-

Types of research-

The type of research can be stated on the basis of its purpose. The research is classified in three categories on the basis of objectives, method of implementation and outcome of the research.

1.       Fundamental research (Basic/pure research)

2.       Applied research

3.       Action research

1.Fundamental research-

The discovery of knowledge for the sake of knowledge is the main aim of fundamental research. This type of research is mainly concerned with the formulation of a theory or the contribution to the existing body of knowledge. The major objective of the fundamental research is to obtain and use empirical data to formulate, expand and evaluate theory.

It has less concern for the application of the findings and social usefulness of the findings and more concern for finding root cause of problem.

Fundamental research is generally carried out in the laboratory and sometimes with animals like theories of Thorndike, Pavlov, Bruner etc.

2.Applied research (Pro Practical research)-

The aim of applied research is to find out solution and to find out success of its applicability. Its purpose is to make improvement in the product or process and to gain knowledge for practical use. It is used to test theoretical concepts in actual problem situation.

Applied research is directed towards the solution of immediate, specific and practical problem. The gain in knowledge is less as compared to fundamental research. The findings of this research are useful to solve day to day problems.

The solar energy is used to develop the products like solar cooker, solar heater.

3.Action research (Implementation Research)-

The applied research with specific expected limitations is action research. Action research is closely related with educational field.

The main aim of action research is to improve the standard and quality of the current situation. This research is used to solve day to day problems arise in teaching learning process. This research is undertaken by teacher, principal and administrator.
